Highlights in dark blonde hair

Applying highlights in dark blonde hair yourself, tips & tricks!

Highlights in dark blonde hair? With the information in this blog on highlights and how to do it yourself by bleaching or dyeing lighter with a frosting cap, you can now apply your dark blonde hair highlights at home.

Are you ready for a change in your dark blonde hair or would you like dark blonde hair with highlights but do not want to go to the hairdresser? In winter and spring when your hair has not yet been lightened by the sun, your dark blonde hair has probably become a lot darker. Or perhaps you find that your hair has become a bit dull and monotonous in colour due to a lack of sunlight, but you don't want to say goodbye to your own dark blonde hair colour altogether, then setting highlights yourself, using a professional and gentle bleaching product, or professional hair dye is a very good idea!

From subtle to striking, highlights in dark blonde hair offer versatile options. You create a summery and playful look, yet it remains natural because your own hair colour is still visible. Moreover, by applying the highlights yourself, you can control whether you go for a subtle change or a complete transformation.

It's always nice when you do it yourself: because the colour of your highlights always blends with your own dark blonde hair, it's less noticeable if the colour choice turns out to be not quite right.

These are the ways to create striking or natural highlights in your dark blonde hair

There are several methods that can make the highlights (or balayage) in your dark blonde hair more or less noticeable. These include the choice of color, the thickness of the highlights (the size of the strands), and finally, the number of strands and the places in your hair where you apply them.

  1. Colour choice for highlights in your dark blonde hair Do you choose a colour that is much lighter than your own dark blonde hair, or do you opt for just one or two shades lighter to blonde?
  2. Thickness of highlights in dark blonde hair You can also choose the thickness of the strands for the highlights. Thinner strands are, of course, a bit less noticeable.
  3. Placement of highlights in your dark blonde hair Strands around your face (face framing) create a very distinct effect on your appearance. Sometimes, just a few strands there can make enough of a change.

Consider in advance how you want to apply the highlights and how light you want them.

Highlights with bleach or with hair dye?

Do you want to achieve only a small colour difference from your own hair colour and is your hair not dyed? Then you can also use hair dye to create highlights. High-quality hair dye is always better for your hair than bleach, and it has a set processing time. Follow the steps in our hair colour advice tool to see which hair dye colours are possible for your highlights.

Do you want a bigger colour difference, or is your hair dyed? Then you can only create highlights with bleach. Make sure, if you want to lighten a lot, that you have a toner on hand to tone the highlights after bleaching.

Using a toner on your highlights

After highlighting, you sometimes need hair dye or a toner, but not always. If you lighten your hair a lot, for example, going from dark brown to light blonde, you should expect that after highlighting (or bleaching) you will always need to dye or bleach again, because your hair will turn orange after highlighting. For lighter blonde hair that is still too warm in colour, a toner often suffices. Sometimes the colour is right after bleaching, especially if less lightening is done, because the added blue pigment ensures a nice cool colour in lighter hair that is bleached.

Applying highlights to your dark blonde hair yourself using a frosting cap

Do you have shoulder-length hair? Then you can use a frosting cap to apply highlights, a safe and easy method.

How to use the frosting cap

  1. Comb your hair thoroughly. Optionally, you can apply some Colour Mask or Argan Silk to make your hair more manageable through the frosting cap. Part your hair as you normally would.
  2. Place the highlighting cap on your head, tighten the strings, and tie it securely. Now, you can use the included 'needle' to pull strands of hair through the holes in the cap.
  3. Once you've pulled through all the strands where you want highlights, apply the bleaching agent. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Check out our instructional video here.
  4. Allow the bleach to process for 15 to 35 minutes. If you feel it’s not blonde enough, you can leave it on for an additional ten to twenty minutes. Keep checking the strands intermittently to see if the desired result has been achieved. Be aware: this can happen very quickly!
  5. Once your highlights are light enough, rinse and wash your hair with the provided shampoo and conditioner. Keep the cap on while rinsing.
  6. Blow-dry your hair and assess the colour while keeping the cap on.

Adjusting the Shade of Your Highlights

Want to change the colour of your highlights slightly? Perhaps make them cooler in tone or a bit warmer? You can use a toner on your highlights to slightly adjust the shade.

How do you choose the perfect toner colour for your highlights?

Are you a warm type? Then opt for warmer shades like gold or caramel for your highlights. Highlights in a warm colour look stunning if your base colour also has a warm undertone, while ash tones are better suited for a cool undertone. It’s important to consider factors like your natural hair colour and your skin tone. Not sure what type you are? Watch our video to help determine your colour type.

Are you applying your highlights in a different way than with a frosting cap? Then it's more difficult to tone your highlights afterward. A toner is usually unsuitable for the dark blonde base colour of your hair, often resulting in an unwanted warm colour in it. We do not recommend toning your hair if it also affects the rest of your hair.
