Brown to blonde hair

Do you want to go from brown to blonde hair with hair dye? You can dye lighter only in some cases, and then only on undyed hair. So only on your own natural hair colour. If you have black or dark brown hair, you cannot dye your hair lighter with hair dye. You can often only lighten your hair by 1 colour level with hair dye.

How dark is your hair right now?

The first step is to find out how light or dark your hair is now. This concerns your natural hair colour (undyed). It is about the so-called colour height of your hair. It is best to look at places where your hair has not (yet) been highlighted by the sun. So at the bottom of your hair in your neck or near your 'outgrowth'. Hair colours (colour heights) run from 1, black, to 11, very light blonde. The first number of a hair colour (the number before the dot) represents this colour height.

To determine your colour height, take a look at the hair dye colours in our shop, for instance, and as mentioned above, look mainly at your non-lightened hair, i.e. your darkest locks of hair.

Dyeing hair lighter is difficult

As mentioned, going from brown to blonde with hair dye is not possible. However, you can lighten your brown hair colour 1 colour level to a lighter brown or dark blonde hair colour. This is only possible if your hair is medium brown (colour level 5) or light brown (colour level 6). You can then lighten your hair 1 shade. For this, look carefully at the WECOLOUR images of these colour heights. This is important because your idea of light brown, for example, might be different. And it's a waste of effort and money to dye your hair with no results.

Can you dye your hair blonder or lighter with hair dye?

Going from dark brown to blonde is not possible. Only undyed (light) brown hair or blonde hair can be lightened one colour level. If you have black hair (colour level 1 or 2) or dark brown hair (colour level 3 and 4), you cannot dye your hair lighter with WECOLOUR hair dye. Other brands of hair dye will also hardly work, or not at all. If you try this anyway, you will notice that you see nothing or almost nothing at all. This is very disappointing, but we do not want to create false expectations.

If you are not sure whether you can dye your undyed hair lighter, check the 'hair colour advice tool' on the website. This is an online questionnaire. After completing four steps, you will know which new hair colours to choose from. This is a colour selection where you can assume that these colours are achievable / give a good result on your hair.

Much lighter? Choose a professional bleaching product

If you really do want a complete metamorphosis and to have your hair a whole lot lighter, we recommend using WECOLOUR's professional bleach and highlight product. Bleach products you can buy in shops can do a lot of damage to your hair. If you want to bleach yourself, make sure you choose a good product and use it very carefully. It really needs to be very carefully considered what is needed for your hair so that you achieve the result you want while causing as little damage to your hair as possible.
