Dye grey hair blonde

Thinking about dyeing your grey hair blonde or ash blonde? In this blog, we'll tell you why that's a super good choice and explain which blonde colours you can choose for the best results.

Blonde blends better with grey

Grey hair in blonde hair or grey roots in blonde hair blends better than with darker hair. So blonde is a good choice if you want to make your grey hair or grey roots less noticeable.

Besides, not only your hair, but also your skin loses pigment as you turn grey. Often a slightly lighter hair colour will look better with a lighter face. A (too) dark colour looks harsh and emphasises wrinkles and lines.

So choosing blonde(er) is completely understandable!

Blonde hair dye: less chance of allergy

Another good reason to choose blonde: the chance of having a non-congenital allergy to hair dye is lower with lighter hair colours. An allergy to hair colour does not have to be congenital. You can develop an allergy at any time, even if you could previously dye your hair without any problems. This is due to the amount of pigment you have been exposed to throughout your life. This pigment is not only in hair dye, but also in all kinds of other dyed or printed products.

Most hair dye allergies are caused by PPD. WECOLOUR hair dyes are PPD-free but do contain other pigments. You can also be allergic to these pigments or develop an allergy. The darker the colour, the more pigment a dye contains. The chance of developing an allergy is therefore less with lighter blonde colours.

Dyeing grey hair blonde: permanent hair dye

In general, grey hair is more difficult to dye with a good coverage. This is because grey hair is stiffer. As you age, less sebum and oil is produced on the scalp. These natural oils soften your hair, allowing the dye to penetrate and adhere better. This is therefore one of the reasons why it is advised not to wash your hair for a few days before dyeing.

So to still get good coverage on the 'harder' grey hair, it is important to use permanent hair dye. If your hair is more than 50 per cent grey, be sure to choose only permanent hair dye. WECOLOUR only has permanent hair dye in its range to achieve good grey coverage.

It's also important to look for dyes that do as little damage to your hair as possible. Because since you touch up your roots every few weeks, the quality of your hair would otherwise suffer quickly. As few aggressive substances as possible and thus as pure as possible is the motto then. Because hair that is in good condition holds its colour better and longer. That is why you should choose to only touch up your roots a few times in between and not dye your whole hair every time. Better for your hair and your wallet. Read this blog on dyeing only your roots or watch the instruction video.

Plant-based hair dye does not cover grey hair

Since it is pure nature, plant-based blonde hair dye then therefore seems a very good choice. After all, there are no harsh substances in it. But always check the ingredients list to be sure. Even plant-based hair dyes are not always 100% plant-based and can contain harmful ingredients.

Real 100% vegetable hair dye does not cover grey. It does have a camouflaging effect. If your hair is only a little grey, this might be sufficient. But as your hair turns greyer, the result becomes increasingly transparent. The coverage of vegetable hair dye is then no longer sufficient.

1. Blonde dyeing of undyed, 100% grey hair

Is your hair all grey? Or rather white? And undyed? Then, provided you didn't have black or very dark brown hair, you can dye your hair any blonde colour you want apart from extra ash light blonde (10.11). This colour do not cover completely your grey hair.

Very light ash blonde (11.1)

Very light ash blonde (11.1) is usually not completely grey-covering either, but you can try out what this colour does on your hair if you like the colour. You just run the risk of it not covering enough. Ask (via a reply to your order confirmation) for 6% activator instead of the standard 9% included. The mixing ratio you need to apply when dyeing will therefore be 1:1 instead of 1:2 as with the 9%. Extend the leave-in time of the hair dye to 65 minutes. This will increase your chances of getting a beautiful end result.

A black or dark brown base

Did you have black or very dark brown hair of your own? Then it is not possible to dye your hair blonde, despite the fact that it is now completely white or grey. This is down to your hair structure. You could try light brown as the lightest possible colour level, which is colour level 6. If this doesn't cover, then you should go darker. But you can't dye your grey hair blonde then, unfortunately. You can, however, lighten your hair with highlights in that case. This is less damaging and also gives a lighter result that makes your outgrowth less noticeable.

Choosing the right blonde colour tone

So basically, almost all blonde colours can go on your 100% grey, undyed hair unless you had black or very dark brown hair. But to choose your blonde colour shade, it is useful to take into account whether you are a warm or cool colour type. Are you a warm type or a cool type? It's best to adjust your nuance accordingly. The tone is the number after the dot in a hair colour. So for colour 7.3, gold is the tone. In our shop, filter on 'blonde'. You will then only get blonde colours. Then you can filter on summer type (for cooler blonde colours) or spring type (for warm blonde colours).

Don't know what type you are or prefer not to make it too complicated? With a natural shade, a colour number with a 0 (zero) immediately following the dot, you never go wrong. For example, light blonde 9.0 or very light blonde 10.01. Want to know or check which colours look better on you? Then read the blog 'which hair colour suits my skin' and watch the video.

2. Blonde dyeing of undyed, not completely grey hair

Are you not 100% grey yet and is your hair not dyed? Then you can dye two colour levels lighter than your own original colour. Unfortunately, this does not apply if your own hair colour falls into colour levels 1, 2, 3 or 4. In that case, you cannot dye your hair lighter without first bleaching it.

For the other colour levels, i.e. from colour level 5 middle brown, you can dye your hair lighter with a maximum of two colour levels lighter. If your colour is at colour level 7, you can choose any blonde colour up to colour level 9. Undyed hair can be lightened by up to two colour levels with WECOLOUR.

Want to go lighter than two colour levels? Then you should first bleach your hair and then dye it blonde(er). However, this ismore damaging to your hair. Especially with greying hair, it is important to take good care of it, especially since it already lacks natural sebum and oils. These are produced less by your scalp as you get older.

Highlights

You can lighten your hair with highlights. This is less damaging and also gives a lighter result that makes your outgrowth less noticeable.

Tip: If your hair is not yet completely grey, it is very nice to choose a cool, ash-blonde hair colour. This matches your grey hair beautifully and makes any roots more natural. In addition, an ash colour prevents your hair from becoming too 'yellow'. Want to read more about how to keep your colour nice and cool? Read our blogs:

3. Dyeing (partially) grey, dyed hair blonder

Is your hair already dyed? Then it is not possible to dye your hair lighter blonde than the dyed colour it has now. After six to eight weeks, your hair will probably be one colour level lighter than what you had dyed it with and you can therefore choose a colour level lighter than you had last time. But no more than two colour heights lighter than your own original hair colour. If you have black or dark brown hair, you cannot dye it blonde because you will not see any result. Then you can have your hair bleached or highlighted.

Dye grey hair ash blonde

Ash blonde is a very nice cool blonde tone and blends beautifully when your roots are starting to get visible. Any stubborn grey hairs won't stand out either. Ash-blonde dyed hair is also less likely to turn 'yellow'. The colour looks fresher. You might say, ideal colour shade, ash blonde. However, there are two cons.

Dyeing ash blonde for cool types

Are you the cool type? Then ash blonde looks great on you! But ash blonde is not the best choice if you know yourself to be the warm type, e.g. the spring type. Then ash can look a bit dull. Instead, opt for a natural tone. Or mix the natural tone with the ash tone in the same colour height. So the 9.0 with the 9.1. Start in equal parts and see whether you want to adjust the mixing ratio to less cool -> add more natural tone or cooler -> use more ash tones. The colour sand light blonde (9.13) contains some coolness but also gold. Maybe this is a good colour for you.

Coverage of ash blonde hair colours on grey hair

Another disadvantage of an ash blonde shade is that ash blonde tones do not cover grey hair as well as a natural shade. But that depends entirely on your own hair and how much grey you have. So just try it out on your hair. Should you (eventually) find the coverage too transparent, you can mix with the natural tone in the same colour level. So the 8.1 with the 8.0. Or you can mix the 8.1 with the 7.1. So then the end result will be slightly darker too.
