Dyeing bleached hair, what do I pay attention to?

Dyeing bleached hair darker

If you want to dye your bleached hair or highlights darker, pay attention to a few things to ensure you achieve the right colour. Care for your hair well eight days prior to dyeing to close your hair cuticles as much as possible. Choose a lighter and warmer colour than the one you aim to achieve.

Porous

Bleached hair is often porous. Porous hair absorbs the colour pigments from hair dye too quickly and too strongly. This is because the hair cuticles are damaged; the dye pigments penetrate faster and more effectively into the cortex of your hair. As a result, a new colour turns out much darker. This is usually also the case if you have fine hair or curls.

Letting your hair recover

It's generally better to give your hair a few weeks to recover from a dyeing, bleaching, or other chemical treatment before dyeing it again. Curious about which treatments this applies to? In our hair colour advice tool, after a few steps, you can see which treatments fall under this category. WECOLOUR hair dye, by the way, is much milder than other brands; hair dyed with WECOLOUR can be dyed again immediately with WECOLOUR hair dye if necessary.

Extra care eight days before dyeing

To ensure that a new colour doesn't turn out much too dark, take extra good care of your bleached hair before you dye it. It will then be less porous. Start eight days before you plan to dye; pamper your hair for five days with a restorative conditioner or mask every day. Let it sit for at least five minutes. You don't need to wash it each time before applying the conditioner or mask. The mask or conditioner can also be applied to unwashed, dry hair. Also, avoid all products that contain ammonia, sulfates, and resorcinol. These substances dry out the hair and damage its structure.

Last wash three days before dyeing

Wash your hair for the last time three days before you plan to dye it. After this last wash, it's better to avoid using a mask or conditioner, or other hair care and styling products that are not water-soluble. The dye might not penetrate well into your hair. Products based on wax or oil are usually not water-soluble. However, WECOLOUR wax is water-based!

WECOLOUR Colour Mask restores hair structure

If you want to quickly improve the condition of your hair, choose Colour Mask. Colour Mask is developed for damaged and bleached hair. It is a deep-acting reconstructive hair mask. You can also add Colour Mask to the hair dye when you dye your hair.

The mixing ratio of colour cream and activator together with Colour Mask is 6:1. So, six parts of colour cream and activator mixed and one part Colour Mask. If you use a whole tube of colour cream and a whole bottle of activator to dye your hair? That's 120 grams of colour cream. Then you add twenty grams of Colour Mask.

Dyeing darker to level 7: choose a warmer shade

Are you dyeing your hair to a light blonde hair colour? Then, in principle, you don't have to consider the level of colour and can dye with the level you have in mind. Just choose a warm colour, as a cool colour will turn too dull. Warm colours are the colour numbers that have a 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 as the second digit, the number after the dot. At WECOLOUR, .7 is quite warm in colour, contrary to sometimes other dye brands.

Choosing a warm colour doesn't mean your bleached hair will have a warm colour afterward, but it prevents your hair from having a green tint after darkening. Darker colours always need some warm pigment as a base, which is permanently removed from your hair by bleaching.

Not keen on using a warmer colour?

Then choose a natural shade If you're not interested in dyeing with a warmer colour, then opt for a natural shade. These are the colour numbers with a 0 after the dot. Try it on a single strand of your hair to see what result this natural shade gives when used undiluted. Is it indeed too dull? Then dye with a combination of a warm colour and a natural shade. Here you can read how to mix colours. Optionally, add Colour Mask when you prepare the dye. At WECOLOUR, you'll find various warm colours; read more about warm hues in our blog on warm hair colours.

Never choose an ash shade, as your hair will become very dull or sometimes even green. Ash shades can be identified by the colour numbers ending in .1.

Want to go to dark blonde or darker? Pre-pigment first

If you want to dye your bleached hair considerably darker, such as to dark blonde (colour level 7) or darker, pre-pigment your hair first. This is because the red pigments have been permanently removed by bleaching. You need enough warm pigment in your hair to achieve a beautiful darker colour. Brown and dark blonde hair dye is intended for use on brown or at most dark blonde hair colour. Only then will you achieve the colour you expect. If you do not take this into account, your new brown or dark blonde colour will be too dull, or your hair may even get a green tint.

Dark blonde

If you're aiming for dark blonde, use copper dark blonde (7.4) or caramel dark blonde (7.7) as a toner. Just be aware that after the toner, you should also take a colour level lighter than what you want to achieve. So, are you going for dark blonde (7.0)? Then dye after the toner with medium blonde (8.0), one colour level lighter.

Make the toner using WECOLOUR hair dye as described below. We're assuming you need a whole tube for shoulder-length hair. If your hair is shorter or longer, adjust the quantities accordingly.

How to make the toner

Mix thirty grams of dark blonde (7.0) colour cream with thirty grams of copper dark blonde (7.4) or caramel dark blonde (7.7) colour cream. Mix this with 60 grams of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply the dye as you normally would with WECOLOUR hair dye. See the instructions if needed. Let the toner process for the usual 35 minutes before rinsing out. When ordering, choose the 3% toner for your hair dye. Then dye with a colour level lighter than the one you aim for. So, if you want to achieve light brown (6.0), dye after the toner with dark blonde (7.0).

Brown

If you want to achieve colour level 4 or 5, make the toner from copper light brown (6.4) mixed with light brown (6.0). Again, afterwards, dye with a colour level lighter.

Caring for your new darker hair colour

To maintain the colour in your bleached and damaged hair as beautifully as possible, good care is very important. In damaged hair, the cuticles are more open, allowing the colour to fade faster. To prevent this, always use a good conditioner for coloured hair after washing (with a good shampoo for coloured hair) to close your hair cuticles. This helps the colour pigments stay in your hair longer, keeping your colour beautiful for longer.

WECOLOUR's conditioner is specially developed for coloured hair. It restores your hair's natural shine and resilience. The conditioner, in combination with WECOLOUR shampoo, optimally cares for and restores the hair. Besides the shampoo and conditioner, we also have Dark Bamboo; a purifying treatment of clay with bamboo. It cleanses, purifies, and cares for the hair. The clay does not foam and is very gentle on your hair and scalp.

If your hair is very damaged or dry, use Colour Mask as a hair mask. For extra care and protection, use Argan Silk. This is a rich, nourishing formula for your (coloured) hair. Argan Silk hydrates, nourishes, and gives a silky shine. It also protects your hair and hair colour from sun, moisture, and heat. Want to read more about good hair care?
