How to dye your hair, a step by step guide

How to dye your hair, a step by step guide

If you want to dye your own hair and you've never done this before, the first thing you should do is choose the right colour. The best thing you can do is to dye your hair only two levels lighter or darker. Use our haircolour advice tool to decide which colour will suit you the best by answering some questions. Are you allergic or are you not sure? Perform an allergytest.

Step 1: Decide which colour level your hair has now

Is your hair it's natural, undyed colour right now? First, decide what the colour of your natural hair is. How dark or light is your natural hair? Compare the colour of your hair with a colour in our online store. This will give you the colour level of your hair. Colour levels range from 1.0 (black) to 11.1 (very light ashblonde). Decide for yourself which colour level your hair has. Our hairdye is standardly delivered with a developer that contains 6% hydrogen peroxide. With this, you can light up uncoloured hair with 1 to 2 levels. The only exception is the 11.1, this colour is delivered with 9% hydrogen peroxide and can lighten up your with 3 levels. We do have a 12% developer available, but only on request. With 12% you can lighten your hair up to 4 levels. One thing to know is that, the higher the percentage of hydrogen peroxide is, the more damaging it is for your hair. Do you want to bleach your hair? This is not possible with hairdye. To bleach your hair you need to decoloulorize it and this is very damaging. If you still want to bleach tour hair, make an appointment with a hairdresser to prevent your hair from turning orange or green.

Do you want to dye your hair darker? You can always do that! Choose 1 or 2 colourlevels lighter than your own hair for the best result. The maximum levels you can go darker is 4. When in doubt, always choose for the lightest colour. If the colour turns out darker than you expected, you can not dye it lighter, but you can always dye it darker.

Do you want to dye your hair lighter? With our dye, you can lighten your hair up to two colourlevels. For example, if your own hair has a colourlevel 5, the lightest colour you can choose is the 7.0 (dark blonde). Our 11.1 (very light ash blonde) is an exception on this, it can light up to 3 colourlevels. If your own hair has a colourlevel 8, you can choose the 11.1.

Has your hair already been dyed? Decide which colourlevel your hair has now. You can not pick a lighter colour. You can dye your hair 1 to 4 levels darker.

Step 2: Choose the colour nuance of the hair colour

Do you know which colour level you want? Start to look at the different nuances within that level. The number on the right side of the dot indicates which nuance it has. These are the nuances:

.0 or .00 natural/neutral,
.1 ash,
.2 iridescent,
.3 golden,
.4 copper,
.5 mahagony,
.6 red,
.7 chocolate/matte.

The neutral colours (.0) have the best coverage for grey hair and do not contain warm or cool undertones. Does your naturally have a warm hue and do you want to mask this? The best choice would be an ash tone. All the other colours lean more to the warmer side.

If one colour is not enough for you, it's also possible to mix different colours together. It doesn't matter which ones, all of our colours are suited for mixing. WIth very grey hair, a purple or red colour can be so beautiful, but be careful. The colour can turn out really bright on grey hair. It's better to mix two colours together for your grey roots. You take a neutral colour and mix this with a different colour. For example the copper dark blonde (7.4), copper red light brown (6.64), copper light brown) (6.4), mahagony brown (5.5), or mahagony red (4.65).

Step 3: Decide how many hair dye packages you need

If you have long, thick hair or just a lot of it, you may need more than just one package of hair dye. One package of hair dye is enough for the average hair that's not longer than your shoulders, so make sure you really think about how many you need. There's nothing worse than dyeing your hair, and realizing it's not enough...

Step 4: Possibly allergic?

Is there a possibility you might be allergic to hair dye? Always perform an allergy test. Since the ingredients differ for each colour, it's important to perform it with the colour you plan on dyeing your hair with. Allergic reactions can be different for each colour too. All of our colours are PPD free, but unlike the rest, our red colours also don't contain TDS. This is the reason why our red colours rarely cause an allergic reaction. To perform an allergy test, mix equal amounts of the colour and developer together and apply this to the inside of your elbow. Cover this with a plaster and let it sit for at least 72 hours. If you don't get a reaction, the dye is safe to use. If you do get a reaction, take it off immediately. Sadly, the dye is not safe for you and we advice you not to use it.

Step 5: Order your desired colour in the WECOLOUR online store

Is the dye safe for you to use? Order your desired colour in the WECOLOUR online store. If you order before 4pm we'll give your package to the post sercives on the same day. And you pay no shipping costs within the Netherlands for orders starting from €30.00. In Germany, Belgium, and France, shipping is free for orders starting from €50.00.

Step 6: Don't wash your hair two days before dyeing

Don't wash your hair at least two days before dyeing your hair. The colour holds on better to unwashed hair and the natural oils in your hair will protect your scalp from the dye. Even thought hair dye from WECOLOUR is as pure as possible, it's still a chemical process. For some people, the develpoper makes their head sting and it helps when their hair is not completely clean. This way it can ast as a protective layer for your scalp. While it's important to not wash your hair. it's even more important to not use any hair style products with an oil basis after the last washing. Think about products like wax, a mask and conditioner. The oil in the products can stop the dye from holding onto your hair and covering it completely. Using a spray to cover your roots is also not a good idea.

Step 7: Dyeing your hair

Read the instructions carefully and prepare everything you need beforehand. Dye your exactly as the instructions say and don't leave it in shorter than it says, this way you're sure the dye can hold onto your hair properly. When dyeing, work careful and clean and use the gloves the package provided. Make sure that you don't spill any dye (put the bowl with the dye on a paper) and mix the colour with the developer. Start with the strands in the front, then the split of the hair and as last lenghts and ends. Be very generous when applying the dye to make sure it will have the coverage you need. After 35 minutes (45 minutes with colour 11.1), wash the dye out of your hair with water. You can leave other colours than 11.1 also 10 minutes longer in your hair for example when your hair does not cover very well. When you're done, wash your hair with the WECOLOUR shampoo and conditioner You can also use our Dark Bamboo for this. The Dark Bamboo works cleansing and the black bamboo in it helps to remove the chemicals. It will not start to foam, so it'll take a few times to get used to, but the result is amazing. Your hair will feel soft and clean!

When you're done, your hair should have turned out exactly as expected and you're happy with the outcome. Did it not turn out as you wanted, send us a message for personal advice.
