There’s no denying it: autumn has well and truly arrived (unfortunately!), and we’re all, albeit reluctantly, getting into the mood for our autumn and winter wardrobes. And, in the same breath, we’re checking out the hair colour trends for winter 2024-2025. Time to settle in on the sofa with a cup of tea and get inspired by the hair colour trends for winter 2024-2025!
It's no surprise that the colours we're seeing this season are generally warmer and darker.
A well-known haircare brand is once again showcasing the most imaginative names. They remind us of the Cowboy Copper (seen all over TikTok) that we saw last year and which remains incredibly popular, with most shades leaning towards warm nuances. Names like Burgundy Cherry Coke, Espresso Balayage, Brownie Batter Brunettes, and Black Forest Gateau Reds cater to autumn types and brunettes among us. Think of shades like Mahogany red dark brown (4.65) for that beautiful deep Cherry Coke tone and Copper red light brown (6.64), a stunning warm hue in a light brown level. For the warmer (chocolate) brown nuances, consider Chocolate brown (5.7) and Hazelnut light brown (6.71).
For blondes (and summer types), we’re seeing cool shades like Old Money Blondes and Cool Bronde. For brunettes, mahogany brown is quite popular—a cool, slightly aubergine-purple brown. Perfect if you're a winter type!
Cool Bronde is a hair trend that combines cooler blonde and brown shades. The word "bronde" merges "brunette" and "blonde," creating a subtle balance between both colours. The cool undertones in this style give the hair an ash blonde, beige, or taupe-like glow, rather than warm, golden hues. This trend is popular because it creates a natural, multidimensional look that suits various skin tones and requires less maintenance than fully blonde colours.
To achieve a Cool Bronde look, strands of hair are coloured with a mix of cool brown and cool blonde shades, creating a natural, sun-kissed effect. Typically, balayage or highlight techniques are used to create smooth transitions between shades, with lighter tones strategically placed around the face. Suitable colours for this look include our ash shades such as:
Are you a fan of Cool Bronde? Naturally, you'll want to keep this hair colour looking fresh for as long as possible. If your shade starts to become too warm over time, our No-yellow Mousse is the perfect product for your bronde hair. This nourishing mousse can be applied to towel-dried or even dry hair, specifically on areas where your colour has become too warm. With No-Yellow Mousse, you’ll instantly banish unwanted warm tones, leaving your hair beautifully soft.
This autumn, two techniques are taking centre stage: adding dimension through highlights and balayage. Typically, hair colours feature a darker base shade with plenty of highlights in one or two colours of the same tone but a few shades lighter. Think of lighter red highlights over a dark brown base, for example. The highlights range from very fine to slightly bolder and aren’t evenly spread throughout the hair; they’re mainly concentrated on the sides.

While highlights are familiar to most, let’s clarify the balayage technique. Balayage is a hair colouring technique where colour is applied by hand to create a natural, sun-kissed effect. The term "balayage" comes from French, meaning ‘to sweep,’ referring to the freehand strokes used to apply colour to the hair. This technique creates soft, gradual transitions between shades, adding depth and dimension without harsh colour lines. Balayage also requires less maintenance than traditional highlights, as regrowth is less noticeable—a practical bonus!
There’s something for every hair length this season, not just long, wavy styles. For short hair, pixie cuts are popular, while the lob (often with straighter hair) suits medium lengths, and Birkin bangs are also making a return this season.
We're seeing a lot of long layered hair with rounded, face-framing cuts at the front. The style often leans towards a wavy texture rather than straight.
A lob, or long bob, is a hairstyle where the hair falls just above or at the shoulders. It combines the classic look of a bob with a bit more length, offering more styling options and a softer appearance. This cut is versatile and suits various hair types, from straight to wavy.
Birkin bangs are a full, long fringe that falls just above or over the eyebrows, made famous by Jane Birkin in the '60s and '70s. They lend a casual, bohemian vibe and work well with various hair textures. This fringe style is back in popularity with the revival of vintage hairstyles.
A pixie cut is a short, playful, and feminine hairstyle where the hair is typically cropped around the ears and neck, while the top is left slightly longer for texture and volume. This style often has a light, edgy look and is easy to maintain. The pixie cut is popular for its versatility, ranging from sleek and smooth to tousled and full of movement. It’s often seen as a stylish, confident haircut that provides a modern and fresh appearance.
A 'papillon' haircut (like Farrah Fawcett's iconic style) refers to a look where the hair is shorter on the sides and back, while longer at the top, resembling butterfly wings. This style creates a light, airy look with plenty of movement and volume. The name 'papillon,' French for "butterfly," highlights the playful, dynamic shape of this cut.
Beyond colours and cuts, there are also trending styling techniques to explore.
Where the side part was once a definite no-go according to Gen Z, we already saw it making a cautious comeback this spring. Happily, this trend is here to stay (at least, we think so). The side part is making a real comeback, now chicer than ever. It works beautifully with long, wavy hair or shorter cuts, such as a wet-look style for an edgier vibe. It gives you a casual, cool, and stylish appearance.
Not a fan of loose hair? This season, low braids (especially long, loose ones) are also making waves. You can go for a single braid or two side braids below the ears for a laid-back, classic look.
Like in the '90s and '00s, headbands are back in style. All kinds and widths are trending, from simple wide bands to narrow ones with added details like rhinestones or pearls. Super convenient on days when your hair just isn’t cooperating or if those grey roots are peeking through and you haven’t had time for a touch-up. Perfect for a quick, stylish fix between colour sessions!
The best choice you can make is, of course, to pick a trend that you feel most comfortable with. These are often the hair colours that naturally suit your season type and the cuts that best complement your face shape. Not sure what your face shape is?
