How can I get platinum blonde hair?

A platinum blonde hair colour: beautiful, right? People often confuse platinum blonde with bleaching your hair. But it doesn't have to be the same! You can get a platinum blonde hair colour with hair dye as well. Our very light ash blonde (11.1) is incomparable with bleaching agents. With platinum blonde, it's important not to rinse the dye out too soon, because the colour needs a bit of time to really lighten your hair. Give the dye some time and let the 11.1 sit for 45 minutes. This will prevent your hair from turning yellow. The ash effect will only really develop properly in the last ten minutes of the dyeing process.

The difference between bleach and platinum blonde hair dye

When bleaching your hair, you'll basically decolorize it. All the pigment is removed from your hair, and the colour disappears. Bleaching is possible on dyed hair as well as natural hair that hasn't been dyed yet. The bleaching agent gets to the core of your hair and rinses it from all the pigment. With bleaching, you can't add an ash or other kind of nuance to your hair. All it really does is remove all the colour from your hair. A lightening hair dye, like our very light ash blonde (11.1) can lighten up your hair up to 3 colour levels with 9% hydrogen peroxide. It can really make your hair platinum blonde. If you want to get your hair to 4 colour levels lighter, you need 12% hydrogen peroxide. You can specify which activator you would like to receive with it when ordering this colour.

If you naturally have blonde hair but dyed it brown, you'll have to bleach it. That's because you can't get dyed hair any lighter. You also can't put any highlights in hair that's already been dyed: you'll need to bleach. If you want highlights in your undyed hair, you can use WECOLOUR dye.

If you're looking for a light blonde hair colour that's a little more ashy, we have the extra ash light blond (10.11). Watch out though, because it can turn a little too ashy on very light hair. This colour isn't really fit for bleached hair or hair that doesn't contain any warm pigments.

Hydrogen peroxide and very light platinum blonde hair

To lighten up your hair you need hydrogen peroxide. Without this substance the hair dye or bleaching agent doesn't work well enough. Hydrogen peroxide is available in different concentrations:

  • 1% very mild lighting = 3,5 volume
  • 3% up to 1 colour level lighter = 10 volume
  • 6% up to 2 colour levels lighter = 20 volume
  • 9% up to 3 colour levels lighter = 30 volume
  • 12% up to 4 colour levels lighter = 40 volume

The higher the number of hydrogen peroxide, the more it lightens up your hair. With bleaching, you need less hydrogen peroxide than with a lightening hair dye. Because bleach is already a lightening product, this usually works with 6% or 9% hydrogen. Never mix it with 12%. This is far too damaging to your hair. If you have black or dark brown hair, then unfortunately you cannot bleach it to platinum blonde in one go. This is because you can lighten a maximum of 6 colour levels (with 9%). Lighter than colour level 6 will therefore not be possible at once.

You can use WECOLOUR bleach to lighten up to a maximum of five colour levels (with 9%). Lighter than colour level 6 will therefore be impossible to achieve right away. Do you want it even lighter? Then you can bleach again. This is not recommended because bleaching is always stressful for your hair. And preferably wait two to three weeks. However soft WECOLOUR bleach is compared to other bleach.

A lightening hair dye needs as much as 9% or 12%. With the very light ash blonde hair colour (11.1) from WECOLOUR, you choose the percentage of hydrogen peroxide. Usually 9% gives you a very nice platinum blonde ash colour in your hair. However, this is more damaging for your hair as, say, 6%. Our hair colour does not contain ammonia, which makes it much less harmful for your hair. Even with 9%, the quality of your hair remains good and your hair gets a beautiful shine. Would you prefer 12% anyway? You make your own choice during the ordering process of the 11.1.

Mixing ratio of the hydrogen peroxide

The shelf life of hydrogen peroxide is limited, so it should always be kept tightly sealed and preferably in the dark. Our very light ash blonde colour is a very light (platinum) blonde with an ash nuance, to prevent a yellow hue. You mix this colour depending on the hydrogen peroxide sometimes 1:1 and sometimes 1:2 with the hydrogen peroxide. This means 1 part colour cream with 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. For example, 20 grams of colour cream with 40 grams of activator. You use the mixing ratio of 1:2 with 9% and 12% activator. At 3 and 6% you use the mixing ratio of 1:1. With a platinum blonde colour it is important not to rinse out the colour too quickly; the colour needs some time to become properly light. Give the hair dye time and leave the very light ash blonde (11.1) for 45 minutes. This will prevent it from turning yellow. In fact, the ash effect is achieved precisely in the last 10 minutes of the dyeing process.

Taking care of your platinum blonde hair

Too much hassle? Our Dark Bamboo is a shampoo and conditioner in one is ideal for the lengths of your hair. It cleanses like a shampoo, does not foam at all and gives extra care. In addition, you can use our Argan Silk. This is a serum that you put in your hair and don't wash out. It is a lovely product and makes your hair shiny. To give your hair extra protection during dyeing, you can add Colour Mask to the dye. We also recommend not dyeing your whole hair every time. If you want to freshen up the colour in the lengths, you could add a little water to the dye and use this to soak the lengths for the last 20 minutes. This way, the hydrogen peroxide will be less strong and less stressful for your hair. It does give your hair a fresh colour and gives your platinum blonde hair a nice shine.
