How do you prevent that a colour will turn out differently on your hair?

How do you prevent that a colour will turn out differently on your hair?

Do you have porous or dry hair? If so, a colour can turn out differently on your hair. The colour often turns out darker because your hair absorbs more pigment from the dye. If you have a lot of heat in your hair, it is better to choose an ash shade to avoid a yellow or orange glow. These are examples to consider in your colour choice. In this blog, we go into this in a little more detail.

Choosing a hair colour: dry or porous hair

Is your hair very dry or porous from previous chemical treatments such as wrapping, (dis)colouring, bleaching and/or perming? These treatments remove moisture from your hair. Blow-drying your hair, treating it with straightening or curling irons, swimming, sun and wind will also make your hair dry. You can also have dry hair due to medication or just naturally. With dry and porous hair, colours often turn out darker or duller because the hair cuticles are more open. If your hair is very porous, choose a lighter hair colour. Make sure your hair is as healthy as possible by taking good care of it. Read more in this blog

Caring for porous hair

Taking care of porous hair is very important for a beautiful result. Choose a good shampoo and conditioner for your hair. WECOLOUR shampoo and conditioner are mild for your hair and scalp. This allows the hair cuticles to close more, bringing back the natural shine of your hair. Last but not least: the new colour will last longer that way! Ideal for dry hair is our Dark Bamboo. This is a white clay shampoo based on black bamboo. Bamboo has a cleansing and conditioning function, restores dry hair and is all-natural. Our Dark Bamboo therefore does not foam, which takes some getting used to. But your hair feels wonderfully soft and healthy after use!

Choosing hair colour: thick or fine hair

Do you have a lot or fine hair? Be careful: even then a colour can turn out darker! Choose a shade lighter than you initially thought. If you find it too light, we will send you a shade darker for free. But if you think it is too dark, there is very little we can do about it. Dyed hair cannot be lightened directly, you have to bleach it, which can be damaging for you hair when not used properly. If you do not want to bleach, you will have to be patient until the colour has lightened by itself. Usually, you can dye your hair a lighter colour after about 8-10 weeks. You can speed it up slightly by washing your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo or spraying chamomile tea into your hair and letting it dry in the sun or blow-drying it dry. Another option is to soak a mixture of shampoo and vitamin C powder into your hair. Leave this in for an hour with a shower cap or plastic wrap around it. Then rinse your hair well and use a shampoo and conditioner. You can read more about this in our blog hair colour dyed too dark.

Choose a hair colour: curly or straight hair

With curly or straight hair, the colour can also differ. Curly hair is often slightly drier, making it appear darker and sometimes giving you a matt colour. Be careful if you prefer an astint, this is a colour ending in .1. You are probably better off choosing a colour that has warmth in it, with a colour number ending in .0, .3, .4 .5 or .7. Of course, you can always mix a warm colour with another colour too! In general, a colour in curly or straight hair shows quite differently, mainly because of its structure. Curly hair has more movement than straight hair, which makes straight hair look more shiny and less dry. Also for curly hair, our Dark Bamboo, is a great product. It gives a lot of care to the hair and leaves the curl bouncy and healthy!

Big change in colour

If you go from very blonde or grey to very dark or very bright, keep in mind that your base determines the final colour. For example, on light blonde or grey hair, copper red light brown (6.64) will be very bright red, while on brown hair it will be much less bright. The colour will also fade back faster. It's better to colour your hair in a natural shade first and then move on to the bright colours. Unless, of course, you love such a bright colour.

Orange hair or just very grey?

Some people get an orange hue over their hair after dyeing. If so, you have a lot of warmth of your own and it is better to go for an ash shade. Ash shades always end in .1. If you find this too matt or if it does not cover well, you can also mix these colours with a natural shade (always ends in .0). If you think your dyed hair is too grey, choose a warm colour. These are the gold shades (.3) or the chocolate shades (.7). An ash shade can even create a green tint in your hair. To get rid of this quickly and easily, you can take a mask made of ketchup. Leave it on well and rinse well! It doesn't smell really good, but it does help.
