How fast does your hair grow?

How fast does your hair grow?

How fast does your hair actually grow? Your hair grows about 1.25 centimetres per month. Want to make your hair grow faster? What can help is not to wash your hair too often, maximum twice a week, massage your scalp, eat healthy and try to avoid stress.

Hair growth per month

When it comes to hair, most people only think of the hair you can see. However, hidden in the scalp is the most important part of your hair, the part that makes your hair grow. The hair follicle is located under your scalp. A hair follicle is four to six mm long. Each follicle makes one to four hairs, with each hair measuring about 0.1 mm. So very, very small! Hair doesn't grow in individual strands, but emerges from the scalp in groups of one to four and sometimes even five or six strands. Your hair grows about 1.25 cm per month. As you get older, the hair follicles can make the hair grow slower or stop growing altogether, which unfortunately can lead to hair loss and baldness.

Phases of hair growth

growth phase
About 90 percent of your hair is actively growing. This growth phase, also known as the anagen phase, can last from two to eight years.

transition phase
Then the catagen phase begins; the transitional phase between the growth and resting phases. During this phase, the hair stops growing and detaches from the subcutaneous connective tissue (from which it gets its nutrients). This phase lasts one to two weeks on average.

resting phase
The rest of the hair is not actively growing and is in the resting phase, called the telogen phase. This phase lasts three to five months in a healthy scalp.

How many hairs do you lose per day?

You lose about a hundred hairs a day. This may sound like a lot, but this is quite normal. The presence of many more hairs in your brush, on your clothes or in your shower drain can be the first signs of (excessive) hair loss. Under the influence of pregnancy hormones, your hair falls out less. So you get a fuller head of hair! After pregnancy, however, you will unfortunately lose these hairs again, so you will temporarily lose more hair.

Tip to help your hair grow 'faster'

Who wouldn't want fuller or longer hair? Unfortunately, your hair never grows as fast as you would like. We give you some tips to make your hair grow faster.

1. Treat your hair with love
Growing your hair faster takes time and effort. Invest in a nourishing shampoo and conditioner. Stock up on that hair mask too, because you will need that too in the near future :-). Check all ingredient lists for alcohol, as it doesn't do much good for your hair. Most types of alcohol dry out your hair, but some types, the oily alcohols like Cetearyl alcohol, for example, do not.

2. Don't wash your hair too often
Growing your hair means not washing your hair too often. Washing loses natural oils that are good for your hair. These oils are necessary for your hair to grow calmly and neatly. So washing your hair every day is too much. It is best to shampoo at most twice a week if you want your hair to grow faster.

3. Gently massage your scalp
This is said to speed up the growth of your hair. By massaging the scalp, you stimulate blood circulation, allowing essential substances to get to the hair follicle. Nowadays, you can buy massage brushes specifically for your hair. So whether it really works to make your hair grow, we don't know, but it's worth a try right!

4. Mask
Use a hair mask regularly to keep your hair healthy. A mask hydrates your hair and makes it feel "like new", restoring soft and beautiful locks. You will notice that your hair feels a lot stronger after this.

5. Don't brush your hair too much
This is not an option for everyone, because what if you have hair that gets tangled easily? Then buy a rough comb whose teeth are far apart. Growing your hair also means keeping it off as much as possible. When combing or brushing your hair, start at the bottom and work your way up. This will prevent your hair from breaking off and your hair will not only be long, but also healthy and full. Using the right brush or comb is also important.

6. Protein and vitamin D
Nutrition is also very important if you want your hair to grow faster. Choose high-protein products such as fish, eggs, fruit and vegetables. It is also good for your skin! So growing your hair is simply done by eating a varied and healthy diet. Vitamin D, or sunlight, also speeds up hair growth. So catch those sunrays! But make sure you protect your hair properly in the sun. Try our Argan Silk , for example. This will protect your hair from UV rays and give you the benefits of natural vitamin D.

7. Scarves and hats
Another way to protect your hair is by wearing scarves and hats. At night, a satin scarf or pillowcase is ideal to keep your hair in tip-top condition without breaking or splitting a single strand. So growing your hair and looking fashionable is super easy with a cool scarf or hat. An extra good excuse to go shopping soon :-).

8. Cold shower
After showering, rinse your hair with cold water. Rinsing with cold water helps to close the hair cuticles, which prevents moisture loss, broken hair and heat damage. Just 10 seconds of rinsing is enough. So don't be afraid of a the cold - it can make a big difference.

9. Clip the tips
When growing out your hair, you naturally want to go to the hairdresser as little as possible. But cutting a tip every now and then is important. Hair ends will split anyway and if you keep it up properly, you won't need to cut them much. This is how to keep your long hair looking its best! Read more in our blog 'How often should you cut your hair?'

Extra love and attention!

So give your hair some extra love and attention, look after it with the right products and you will see that your hair will be longer and fuller in no time. Of course, do not forget to visit the hairdresser regularly to have the ends cut. This will prevent split ends and keep your hair beautiful for longer too. The only downside of letting your hair grow faster is that you will also have to touch up your outgrowth sooner. It all depends on how fast your hair grows!
