Here's how to keep your red colour longer!

Here's how to keep your red colour longer!

It doesn't just seem that way, it's true: copper, red and warm colours really do disappear from your hair faster than other colours. Why is this? We figured it out for you.

The explanation appears to be found in chemistry... It is because the molecule of red pigment is larger than that of other colours. As a result, it cannot penetrate the cortex of the hair as deeply as other colours. As a result, your pretty red colour fades quickly if you're not careful. You prevent this by being really nice to your coloured hair. Everything you normally do to keep coloured hair beautiful for longer applies to your red colour.

Dyeing tips

You can boost the colour intensity of your red colour by keeping a 45-minute soaking time when dyeing instead of the usual 35 minutes. There's even a tip circulating (not tested by us, but safe) that after dyeing and the soaking time of the dye in your hair, first rinse your hair with water only. Then wait an hour before washing with shampoo. It's worth a try, of course! After shampooing, always use the conditioner included in your hair dye pack too. Our Dark Bamboo is also great for gently cleansing your hair. This cleansing treatment is very gentle on your hair and also conditions it immediately. In addition, Dark Bamboo also closes your hair cuticles properly.

After dyeing: water and shampoo are your enemy!

Wait at least three days before washing your hair for the first time after colouring. Even after that, really try to wash your hair as little as possible. And if you wash your hair with shampoo, use a shampoo that does not contain SLS as an actual detergent. And those times you do wash it, use shampoo and conditioner one time and conditioner alone to 'wash' (co-wash) your hair with. Or use the Dark Bamboo to gently cleanse and condition your hair. Rinse your hair with as cold water as possible. This will make your hair cuticles close nicely, protecting the red pigment better. Or use a dry shampoo to wash your hair less again. If you do not wash your hair but just take a shower or bath, make sure you protect your hair from the running water. A shower cap will prevent your hair from getting wet.

Co-wash ('washing' with only conditioner) and no-poo (washing your hair without shampoo but with only water or alternatives to shampoo such as rye flour, baking soda, vinegar) are definitely of interest to you now!

No go: SLS-based anti-dandruff shampoo

And, probably superfluous, but absolutely do not use SLS-based anti-dandruff shampoo like Head&Shoulders. This is because SLS is a very aggressive cleanser that washes away flakes so easily, but the same goes for your red tan... Also, pay close attention to the pH level of the shampoo you use. A high pH increases the risk of friction between the hair fibres, which in turn damages your hair and prevents the red colour molecules from being retained by your hair. For your dyed hair, a pH level below 5.5 is ideal. This closes the cuticles properly and your hair is smoother and shinier.red-colour-longer-beautiful

Keep those cuticles closed!

So keeping those cuticles open as little as possible is the motto. This also means rather not swimming too much (or at least not getting your hair wet in the process), not exposing your hair to the sun, not using too much heat when styling your hair (or rather not at all!), not backcombing and not roughly combing and brushing. To keep your scales closed, you can use a nourishing cream such as Argan Silk and a hair mask occasionally to nourish and care for your hair.

Colour fades less on healthy hair

Yes, it is indeed almost a whole new way of caring for your hair and takes some getting used to, but we promise you: your beautiful colour will really last a lot longer this way. Want to know more about dyeing and caring for your hair the right way? Check out our blogs. And realise that the colour of your dyed hair will last much longer if your hair is healthy, too. The healthier your hair is, the longer your hair colour will last. WECOLOUR's care and styling products help you achieve this.
