Natural remedy for dandruff

Looking for a natural remedy for dandruff? Probably, like most people, you suffer from dandruff from time to time. Annoying and maybe even embarrassing. Especially if you have dark hair or wear dark clothes, dandruff is unfortunately very visible.

Before resorting to an aggressive anti dandruff shampoo, it is advisable to see if a natural remedy works for you. We have compiled a list of recommended natural remedies for you where: if it doesn't work, it doesn't hurt. Good to know: these remedies have actually been shown to work in American studies.

Natural remedy for dandruff

Dandruff is a skin condition that affects the scalp and causes itching, flaking and oily patches. Usually, seborrheic eczema or another form of eczema, psoriasis, dry skin or an allergic reaction is the cause of dandruff. Fortunately, there are also natural remedies you can try against dandruff. So you don't have to immediately use an aggressive anti dandruff shampoo. It's better for the quality of your hair and it also helps to keep the colour in your hair longer!

1.    Tea trea oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. Traditionally, tea tree oil has been used to treat various skin conditions.

This is because tea tree oil contains a compound called terpinen-4-ol, which possesses powerful antimicrobial properties. Tea tree oil with high concentrations of terpinen-4-ol can help reduce dandruff by suppressing the growth of fungi and bacteria on the scalp. Research from 2017 has shown that tea tree oil can effectively fight bacteria.

Applying tea tree oil directly to the scalp can cause inflammation or rashes. So don't. It is best to add a few drops of tea tree oil to your usual shampoo.

There are also shampoos available that already contain tea tree oil.

2. Lemongrass oil

Lemongrass and lemongrass oil are traditionally used to treat digestive problems, lower blood pressure and reduce stress. But lemongrass oil also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce dandruff.

According to the findings of a small 2015 study, hair tonics containing 10 per cent lemongrass oil reduced dandruff by 81 per cent after two weeks.

Like tea tree oil, lemongrass oil can cause irritation or allergic reactions if you apply it directly to the skin. So here too, lemongrass oil is best mixed a few drops with your regular shampoo or conditioner.

3. Aloë Vera gel

Aloe vera is a succulent plant known for its healing properties. The gel in the leaves contains several bioactive compounds, such as antioxidants and amino acids, which can reduce dandruff.

Aloe vera is known to be able to improve moisture retention in the skin and promote wound healing. Aloe vera can also reduce inflammation, which can help people with dandruff symptoms, such as itching. Research from 2015 suggests that aloe vera's antifungal and antibacterial properties can prevent dandruff. Small-scale research also shows that aloe vera is effective in treating seborrheic dandruff.

You can buy an aloe vera plant and extract the gel from the leaves, or buy the gel ready-made. You use the gel as follows:

  • Apply the gel to your scalp.
  • Leave the gel on for half an hour to an hour.
  • Use a mild shampoo, suitable for sensitive scalps, to wash the gel off your scalp.

You can do this two to three times a week for optimal results.

4. Omega-3 vetzuren

Being deficient in this fatty acid can cause dandruff, brittle nails and also dry skin. So make sure you get enough omega-3 fatty acids. Foods that contain large amounts of omega-3 include salmon, mackerel and walnuts. Of course, you can also take omega-3 supplements.

5. Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that supports the body's immune system and promotes cell growth. People can get zinc from animal proteins, nuts and whole grains. A zinc deficiency has been cited as a possible cause of seborrhoeic eczema and dandruff. Many anti dandruff shampoos contain zinc pyrithione because it prevents fungal growth and removes excess skin cells from the scalp. Rather not use an anti dandruff shampoo? Zinc you get through your diet and is mainly found in meat, cheese, cereals, nuts and seafood such as shrimps and mussels. You can also buy zinc supplements, for instance at a health food shop or drugstore and, of course, online.

Not all natural remedies work for everyone. If you have an underlying skin condition, such as eczema or psoriasis, it is better to see a skin doctor before trying one of these new natural remedies for dandruff.
