Restoring damaged hair

Damaged hair is dull, dry, hard to handle and it feels a bit rough. If you have damaged hair, the first thing you want is to get it healthy again. The best solution for this is to get a rigorous haircut, though this is probably not your favorite choice. With these changes in your daily hair routine you will be able to restore your damaged hair.

Causes of damaged and dry hair

The most common causes of damaged hair is the use of heat, such as from an airdryer or a hair straightener. However, special treatments, like dyeing or bleaching your hair, can really do some damage as well. Some lesser known causes of damaged hair are:

  • Washing your hair too often with an aggressive shampoo
  • Wearing your hair in a tight ponytail, bun or braid
  • Brushing your hair too often and teasing it
  • Swimming in seawater or water with chlorine
  • A shortage of vitamine A

This is what damaged hair looks like Damaged versus healthy hair

The structure of damaged hair is different than that of healthy hair. When you have healthy hair, your hair cuticles will overlap each other like roof tiles, protecting the inside of your hair. The inside is the reason why your hair is strong and elastic. With damaged hair, the hair cuticles have been affected and stand open. Because they are open, the insides are not protected anymore and will lose their strength and vitality.

Restoring dry and damaged hair

Now you know what causes dry and damaged hair, you also know how to prevent it. However, we have a few tips to restore damaged hair:

  • Treat your hair with a serum. Do you use heat to style your hair? Make sure the serum you use is a heat protecter, like our Argan Silk. Or even better, limit the use of heat.
  • Use a hair mask to take extra care of your hair.
  • Limit chemical treatments and dye your hair with an ammonia free hairdye.
  • Wash your hair with a mild shampoo that does not contain SLS.
  • Use a conditioner to close the hair cuticles.
  • Rinse your hair with cold water after washing.
  • Beat your gently with a towel to dry instead of rubbing.
  • Use a satin pillowcase to sleep, this will give less friction, making it gentle for your hair.
  • Your hair and scalp need sebum to stay flexible. Vitamin A is the incentive for your sebum production. Food like carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, oranges and tangerins contain a lot of vitamin A.

Dyeing dry and damaged hair

Do you have dry, porous or damaged hair? Be very careful when picking the colour. Dry and damaged hair will suck up the pigment of the dye and cause the colour to turn out much darker than expected. Sometimes even as much as three colourlevels! Make sure to pick at least one colourlevel lighter and don't forget to mix in our Colour Mask with the hairdye. The mask will protect and restore your dry and damaged hair while dyeing.
