Shampoo for oily hair

It would be ideal, but unfortunately, there is no miracle shampoo for oily hair that works for everyone. In addition, most greasy hair shampoos are often aggressive and only aim at fighting greasy hair directly but without lasting results. On the contrary, aggressive shampoos make your hair increasingly greasy.

So before you look for the solution in a possibly aggressive shampoo for oily hair, it is recommended to read this blog so that you will (hopefully!) get rid of oily hair for a long time.

What is oily hair?

Your scalp produces sebum to keep the skin supple. It also protects the hair follicles from external influences, allowing healthy hair to grow. Sebum thus keeps your scalp and hair healthy and supple.

But sometimes the balance is lost and your scalp produces too much sebum, which results in your hair becoming oily too quickly. Most people experience a greasy layer after a few days, this is quite normal. Others have greasy hair a few hours after shampooing. And that, of course, is very annoying.

Do not use an aggressive shampoo for oily hair

If your hair gets greasy quickly, you might not be using the right shampoo. Often, an aggressive shampoo is used because it makes your hair nice and clean. All sebum and oil are then gone. But unfortunately, this is short-lived.

Many cheaper shampoos also contain low-grade silicones. This makes your hair feel nice and soft. But what these ingredients actually do is put a layer around your hair. Your hair becomes heavier and the cuticles suffocate. And this coating also makes your hair greasy faster. Therefore, instead of using drugstore shampoos, use really good quality products that do not leave a residue on your hair. Ask your hairdresser or look in our hair care shop.

Sulphate and silicone free shampoo

Sulphates, such as ammonium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate, are aggressive degreasers that attack the scalp and dry out the hair. An alternative to sulfates in shampoos are cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium c14-16 sulfonate and sodium coco-sulfate. Although these do contain the word 'sulphate', they are mild cleansers derived from, for example, coconut fatty acid. Silicones, such as dimethicone, can also be found in shampoos. These create a silky layer over the hair and scalp, making your hair feel soft and shiny. However, this is a chemical film that gets around your hair and scalp and builds up.

You might wash your hair too often with aggressive shampoo

Washing your hair too often is also often the cause of oily hair. Strange as it may sound, washing your hair too much and using an aggressive shampoo in the process is often the very culprit. An aggressive shampoo with sulphates does indeed wash the grease out of your hair very well, and of course that seems to be the solution. But if you wash your hair too often, especially if you use a shampoo that is too aggressive, you strip your scalp of its natural oils. You remove all the sebum from your scalp in this way. The sebaceous glands are then told that the skin is 'dry' and that sebum needs to be produced again. The production of even more sebum is therefore stimulated by washing too often and with aggressive shampoos. Your hair then becomes oily again very soon after washing. This creates a vicious circle.

It is healthier for your scalp to wash your hair every three to four days, but your scalp has to get used to the new routine. You can slowly reduce the frequency of washing by washing every other day for a few weeks at first. Then, gradually add another day between washes. Eventually, your scalp will thank you and produce less sebum in the long run.

Postpone hair washing

So it is very important to wash your hair less. It can be quite tricky! Don't feel comfortable at all with your oily hair in between delayed washings? Try to stick with it!

Camouflage

Camouflage your greasy hair by not wearing your hair loose but halfway up, for example. The next day when it is still greasier, you can make a braid and the day after that a bun, for example. The ponytail baseball cap is also very trendy at the moment. Super stylish for the summer as well!

If you have short hair, you can hide your greasy hair with, for example, a boho style hairband, a trendy hairband with wire or a hat.

Dry shampoo

Sometimes you can also use a tiny bit of dry shampoo at the roots of your hair to make it look a little less oily. However, opinions are divided on this. Most dry shampoos contain synthetic additives such as alcohol and perfume. These ingredients dry out the scalp and hair shaft, clog pores and irritate your scalp. And an unhealthy scalp means excessive sebum production. The best thing to do, therefore, is to be patient, not to use dry shampoo and to give your oily hair a chance to recover its balance for a few weeks. Or use a good quality dry shampoo.

The right shampoo for oily hair

What do you need to consider when looking for shampoo for oily hair? It is best to choose a good quality shampoo that cleanses well and at the same time is gentle enough to keep your hair healthy, for example WECOLOUR shampoo or another good quality shampoo, for example shampoos sold by hairdressers. Also very gentle on your scalp is Dark Bamboo, a gentle cleansing treatment based on white clay. If you have oily hair, it is also essential to wash your hair thoroughly. It is best to wash twice. Make sure you apply it to the scalp until you have an even lather. Rinse for about 30 seconds longer than you think is necessary so that all the product really rinses out.

Shampoos and conditioners with heavy moisturising ingredients like coconut and argan oil are not suitable for oily hair. It is better to use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner that contains only light, all-natural ingredients. After shampooing, rinse your hair with lukewarm water instead of warm water. This reduces sebum production and closes your hair cuticles, which gives you a beautiful shine.

Using two different shampoos

Another thing that might help: if you have long hair, the roots might be oily, but with longer hair, the ends and lengths are often not. But everyone uses the same shampoo for the roots and the ends. Wash your hair's roots and ends with a different shampoo. The roots can then be washed with a good shampoo for oily hair and the drier lengths with, for example, a conditioning shampoo.

Ingredients shampoo for oily hair

Oily hair shampoos often contain the following ingredients:

Charcoal

Charcoal helps absorb excess oil in the scalp.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has anti-yeast and antimicrobial properties often associated with oily hair.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid can help remove excess flakes and keratin on the scalp. Yet, it is mild enough for people with sensitive scalps, even those with scabs from plucking or scratching.

The following ingredients are also often found to restore balance to your scalp and calm your hair: peppermint, spearmint and rosemary oils, wine vinegar, to tame an irritated scalp, balance oil production and restore the health of your hair in just a few washes.

Do's for oily hair

Avoid styling products

Reduce the use of hair products such as wax, gel, mousses and hairspray, or make sure you choose mild products without silicones and drying alcohols. Products in spray form often contain harsh chemicals that affect the health of your scalp. This can be irritating, causing the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Wax, gel and mousse form a greasy layer that slowly melts to the scalp. This also makes the hair greasy and makes it difficult to wash your hair every three to four days. Do you use wax, because you have short hair for example? Then only rinse your hair with water and really only wash your hair with shampoo every three to four days. In addition, the wrong styling products such as hairspray, gel and mousse can also make thin, limp hair appear greasier, so avoid these products whenever possible if you want to get rid of oily hair.

Apply conditioner ( without silicones) and mask only to the tips and lengths

Always apply a conditioner after shampooing, this is very important to keep your hair lengths healthy and prevents damage. Make sure that you only apply conditioner or hair mask to the drier lengths and ends. Conditioner contains substances that nourish your hair. This is good for the drier lengths of your hair. But it can make your scalp greasier. Apply conditioner from about the height of your ears downwards. Also avoid silicones in your conditioner, like dimethicone.

Touch your hair/skin as little as possible

Do not touch your hair and scalp as much as possible. Also try to comb and brush less. Touching your scalp stimulates the blood circulation and sebum production on your scalp.

Keep your brushes and combs clean

Keep brushes, combs and other tools you use for your hair clean. Clean them regularly by using a bowl of lukewarm water with baking soda dissolved in it.

Make sure you have a clean pillowcase

Also change your pillowcase a little more often. Often grease from your skin, for example from skincare products, accumulates there. And grease from your hair. This makes your hair greasier.

Don't: Home and kitchen remedies

Sometimes you come across the weirdest anti-oily hair tips. For example, we came across washing your hair with washing-up liquid and other tips that do not help against oily hair and only harm your hair. So don't do it.

Hormones

Apply the above tips for a few weeks. Do you see no or not enough improvement? That is possible, there is another cause for your oily hair than washing it too often with an aggressive shampoo. The cause of your greasy hair can often be found in hormonal fluctuations. For example, your scalp can produce more sebum during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy or menopause. Unfortunately, the above tips have no effect on this. The only thing you can do is keep washing with a good shampoo specifically for oily hair.

Summary: Do you want to get rid of oily hair in a healthy way? Leave it alone as much as possible and don't wash it too often. And use a good quality shampoo for oily hair.
