Root touch-up sprays are gaining popularity, and it’s no wonder. In just one minute, your visible roots vanish like snow in the sun. They are convenient for when you have a party that evening or simply don’t have the time or feel like it to colour your roots. But is using these root touch-up sprays really a good idea? We explain it to you.
How Root Touch-Up Spray Works
Root touch-up spray originally entered the market as an actual spray. Nowadays, there are also powders and creams to touch up your roots. The goal of all these products is the same: to temporarily cover up the roots. Root touch-up spray often works based on propellant gas. Essentially, you spray the 'colour' onto your hair, and it’s almost impossible to avoid getting some on your scalp. This can dry out your scalp and cause unsightly stains. Root touch-up powders are usually provided with a brush or sponge, allowing you to dab the powder onto your roots. You can also use it to 'fill in' thin areas. Root touch-up creams work like mascara for your hair. Using a small brush, you apply the cream to your hair, allowing you to precisely cover one or a few hairs.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Products to Temporarily Cover Roots
The main advantage of root cover-up products is, of course, that your roots disappear like snow in the sun in a short time, lasting until your next wash. This allows you to easily delay a visit to the hairdresser by a few weeks. Additionally, you can use them to disguise bald spots and make your hair appear fuller. However, there are also disadvantages; some root touch-up sprays, creams, or powders can transfer to your clothing, towels, and bedding. This means they can also transfer when you run your hands through your hair. To prevent stains on other surfaces, you always need to wash your hands afterward. Moreover, these products can give your hair a stiff texture, and despite often claiming to wash out easily on the packaging, this is not always true in practice.
Why We Don’t Recommend Root Touch-Up Spray (and Will Never Include It in Our Range)
Every now and then, we have a brainstorming session with our supplier. We all sit around the table and share our ideas and wishes. It’s super fun and very educational. Our supplier from Italy is very progressive and always open to new input. However, with eighty years of experience in the hair industry, they also know immediately what is and isn’t feasible. One of the wishes on our list was a sustainable, non-damaging root touch-up spray, powder, or cream. As described above, we thought this would be an ideal product to temporarily cover your roots for a party, wedding, or job interview. Unfortunately, our wish could not be fulfilled. Root cover-up products are full of chemicals because otherwise, they wouldn’t stay in place. They are very harsh on your hair and scalp, and because you can never completely wash them out, hair colour adheres much less effectively after using such products. The result? Less coverage of your gray hair or a different colour than you are used to. Our supplier was adamant: don’t start with it.
Additionally, our hair dye remains usable for a year after opening, so you can use it multiple times to colour your roots. A sustainable option that also keeps your hair healthy and shiny. In our opinion, this is a good alternative to root touch-up spray.
