Touch up root regrowth at home

Touch up root regrowth at home

You've dyed your hair some time ago and now you have root outgrowth you wanna to get rid of again. Don't dye all of your tresses, but only colour your roots. You should dye your roots once every four to six weeks, depending on the contrast in your natural and dyed colour. Your hair then remains healthy and the colour in the lengths of your hair doesn't become darker. WECOLOUR has 44 hair colours to touch up your regrowth! All these colours can be combined.

Touch up regrowth

Whether you dye your hair at home or in a salon, you'll have to touch up your regrowth once. The hair grows about 0.50 inches a month (1.25 cm), so you'll have to dye the regrowth after about four to six weeks to have no visible outgrowth. Where a darker regrowth often gives more depth to the hair, a light outgrowth isn't very natural. And when your natural haircolour has become grey, you probably don't want it to be visible either.

It's not necessary to dye your hair all over again. In fact, it's better not to! In the dyed hair, the colour will pile up in the lengths of your hair and it may become darker. If you want to dye the regrowth lighter than your natural colour, you can damage the lengths with repeated dyeing. We recommend to dye the regrowth three times and then dye the hair allover again. However, when you touch up your regrowth, you can refresh the colour in the lengths of your hair at the same time.

What colour is best for your roots?

Normally, you use the same colour (combination) as you did when you dyed all of your hair. But if you didn't dye with a natural colour (.0) and your roots are (partly) grey it's probably better to dye it with a mixed colour in a ratio 1:1 of the colour you used all over, and the natural colour in the same colour height. So you if you used the 5.7, then use the 5.0 brown mixed with 5.7 chocolate brown.

WECOLOUR hair dye can be kept for up to 12 months after opening

Usually half a tube of hair dye is more than enough to touch up your regrowth. If you haven't mixed the colourcream with the activator yet and it's still in the tube, you can store it for another 12 months after opening. Some people only need 20 grams and can therefore dye their roots 3 times with just one package of hair dye. But be sure to apply the dye generously! Otherwise the coverage won't be very good. The advantage of WECOLOUR hair dye is that you can decide how much you want to use, because you can store the rest.

How to touch up your roots step by step (see also instruction leaflet in box):

  • Don't wash the hair 48 hours in advance. The skin's own oils reduce the risk of irritation to the scalp and make it easier for the pigments to penetrate your hair. It is best to use no hairmask, conditioner or styling products after washing your hair. But certainly be sure not to use silicon or oil based products nor root touch up spray or powder in your hair these two days. Sorry!
  • Divide the hair into four parts. Use clips to secure the parts.
  • Spread some petroleum jelly or other greasy cream along the hairline so that the dye doesn't stain the skin.
  • Weigh the colour cream and activator with a kitchen scale and make sure you use the same amount of both, so keep the ratio 1:1 (unless you use colour 11.1, take 1 part of colour cream and 2 parts activator).
  • Loosen a part and apply the hair dye with a brush. When applying the dye, use the WECOLOUR colour brush to get more professional, precise results. Try to dye as little of the already dyed lengths as possible.
  • Use the tip of the brush to separate the different strands.
  • Repeat until the roots are dyed in all four parts.
  • Let the dye work for 20 minutes from the moment you have finished dying the outgrowth.
  • Add 1/3 of water to the rest of the solution and comb through the lengths of your hair. You only do this if you want to refresh the colour allover. Let this sit in for another 15 minutes.
  • Rinse the hairdye with lukewarm water and wash your hair with a soft shampoo.
  • If necessary, repeat until all paint has been rinsed out.
  • Apply a conditioner and leave to act for a while. Rinsing the hair with cold water closes the cuticles well.

How long do you let the dye process?

Even if you only colour the outgrowth, you let the dye sit in for 35 minutes. If you dye it very light ash blonde with colour 11.1, the processing time is 45 minutes. If you apply conditioner in the lengths and ends, the paint that drips down will not stain.

Ways to refresh the lengths of your hair

If you touch up your roots, you can also easily refresh the lengths. There are several ways to do this.

For example, when the dye is in your roots, you can mix the leftover paint with some (1/3) water. When the dye is in your hair for 20 minutes, put the leftover mixture in the lengths and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then rinse, shampoo and condition. This way you do not sacrifise healthy hair.

Another way is to comb the rest of the solution through the lengths of your hair and let it sit for the time specified in the manual after applying the hair dye on the roots. Then shampoo your hair and condition.

Another way is to spray the lengths of your hair wet after 20 minutes and massage the hairdye from the roots into the rest of the hair. You can also use the rest of the solution, if any. After 15 minutes, rinse the entire hair. Then shampoo your hair and condition.

After three times of dyeing your roots and refreshing the lengths, we recommend dyeing the entire hair again.

Storing WECOLOUR hairdye

Because WECOLOUR colourcream and activator have a shelf life of twelve months after opening, it is ideal for dyeing just your roots. Because you can store it, you can touch up your roots several times with one tube. But keep in mind, once the colour cream has been mixed with the activator, you can no longer store it. There are 44 beautiful colours available. If you order two colours or hairdye and one of our care or styling products, the package of hair dye €18.95 per package. When ordering four or more products, the price for hair dye is € 17,95.

With a subscription to WECOLOUR hair dye, you also pay less! A package of hair dye costs only € 17.95 (instead of 19.95).
