What to pay attention to when dyeing your hair black

What to pay attention to when dyeing your hair black

Black hair dye contains a lot of hair dye pigment, which can lead to some irritations. Your hair has to endure more so it's important to use a black hair dye of good quality, such as WECOLOUR hair dye.

Are you dyeing your hair black?

Is black your favourite hair colour and do you already dye your hair black? Then we probably don't have to tell you more about that. Are you dyeing your hair black, but not with WECOLOUR? And do you want to keep dyeing your hair in a healthy way? Read more about what to pay attention to in this blog. Black hair dye contains a lot of pigment, which can cause irritations on your skin and hair. Your hair also has to endure more so it's important to use a black hair dye of good quality. Most black hair dye contains a lot of chemicals and substances that dry out and damage your hair. The worse the quality of your hair, the faster the hair dye will fade out. You'll have to dye your hair increasingly often, and with the big amount of pigment and chemicals this isn't completely fail-safe. That's why we make our black hair dye as pure as possible, with mild ingredients that care for your hair instead of damaging them. You won't have to dye your hair as often and you'll still have a nice colour.

Building up an allergy by dyeing your hair black

Once you dye your hair black, there's a big chance you'll stick to this colour in the future. The disadvantage of a black or very dark brown hair colour is that it contains the most pigment out of all the colours, to make your hair colour so dark. This doesn't have to be a problem, if you can endure it well. But did you know that because of exposure to so much pigment you can build up an allergy? Because not only hairdye contains these dark pigments, there are also a lot of other products which contain ingredients that can cause the build up of an allergy. If you didn't have an allergic reaction to hair dye before, you could suddenly become allergic because of this. Usually the allergic reaction is a reaction to the pigment. Some people can dye their hair for years without any problems and suddenly have an allergic reaction. It's not really clear why this is.

PPD

Most hair dye from the drugstore and hair salon contains PPD as pigment. This substance, p-phenylenediamine, is almost always the cause of allergic reactions to black hair dye. There is hair dye that doesn't contain PPD, such as henna, but this doesn't have coverage on grey hair. These kinds of hair dye add another kind of pigment to get coverage on grey hair. This substitute, toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate, also known as TDS or PTD is family of PPD. WECOLOUR uses this substitute as well. It's a lot less damaging and the chances of getting an allergic reaction are much smaller.

Sudden allergic reactions

When using black or another dark hair dye with PPD, it's possible to suddenly get an itching scalp and red bumps after dyeing your hair, even if you've been using the same brand for years. Don't ignore this! Next time, do an allergy test on your skin with the dye you're planning on using. There's a chance you'll have a worse reaction next time, meaning it won't just be an itching feeling. It can start burning, and you can even get blisters. If that happens, let a doctor or dermatologist take a look at which substances you're allergic to and be extra careful.

Henna tattoo

We've seen an increase of allergic reactions to PPD the last few years. This is often because of henna tattoos. It's been scientifically proven that henna tattoos can lead to bad reactions to hair colouring products. If you're using both henna tattoos and some form of hair colouring product, there's an even bigger chance you'll have an allergic reaction. The hair dye product often gets the blame, while it's the henna tattoo that's actually causing the reaction. Using hair dye containing PPD, especially black or dark brown, at the same time you have a henna tattoo is especially disastrous. So look out for hair dye containing PPD, and don't get black henna tattoos. The allergic reactions to this combination can be horrendous.

Deceit

Also watch out for misleading descriptions. Just because the box says the dye is 'natural', doesn't mean it doesn't have chemical substances such as PPD. Manufacturers are allowed to use the word 'natural' in their description if their product contains as little as 1%  natural ingredients. When dyeing your hair black, you want to have good coverage and a permanent colour. This process is never 100% natural. So, when picking out your dye, pay attention to the ingredients rather than the description on the box. Examples of pigments with PPD are p-aminophenol, m-aminophenol, nitro-p-phenylenediamine, and n-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (para-aminophenylamine). If the dye does contain PPD, it's better to switch it out for a dye with TDS instead of PPD. TDS is much less harmful and has a much smaller chance of causing an allergic reaction. TDS is still family of PPD, so stay alert and always perform an allergy test. We'll send you a tester for free.
