Which brush or comb is right for my hair?

Which brush or comb is right for my hair?

There are so many different hairbrushes, but which brush or comb suits your hair and what is the best hairbrush? If you have straight to wavy normal hair, you can largely choose what you like. But do you have dry hair, for example? Then choose a flat, good hairbrush with wild boar hairs. With curly hair, it is better not to brush because you will brush out your curl. Then comb with a wide-toothed comb. Round brushes should really only be used when blow-drying your hair.

How do you decide which is the best hairbrush?

They detangle your hair, help smooth it and create volume or curls. And by brushing properly with a good hairbrush, you also bring the natural sebum and oil from your scalp to the lengths of your hair. This will keep your hair soft and supple - the ultimate hair care!

So to know what the best brush for your hair is, you first need to establish what you want to use the brush for. If you are blow-drying your hair, for example, it is best to use a round brush. It is also important to establish the structure and condition of your hair. Namely, do you have curly, dry or frizzy hair? Then it is best to pay attention to what you can and cannot do best.

No matter what kind of hair you have, when brushing it is important to always start at the bottom of your hair (i.e. at the ends). This way you work your way up and the tangles are much easier to brush out, causing less damage to your hair.

Types of hairbrushes

There is a huge range of hairbrushes of all kinds, too many to cover them all. However, we will highlight the most important ones:

Wild boar bristle

It is very healthy for your hair to brush with a good natural hair brush. Brushes made of wild boar hair are by far the best hair brushes. This is because the structure of wild boar hair resembles the structure of human hair. As a result, wild boar hairs are able to absorb hair oil produced by your scalp. During brushing, this sebum is released to the drier lengths and ends of your hair.

These natural oils give your hair a natural shine and fullness. It also prevents your hair from splitting. A good natural hairbrush also removes dust, dirt and loose hair.

Regularly brushing your hair with a natural brush will make it shine more and give it more volume. You only use a wild boar bristle brush on dry hair.

Hair brush with pins

If you prefer to brush your hair roughly to keep more waves in it, choose a brush with pins instead of hair. This brush has more of the effect of a comb, keeping the strokes more beautiful.

without pins

In a hurry and don't have time to style your wet hair but want to get through it quickly with a brush? Then choose a brush without balls on the ends of the pins. The spheres cause the hair to get stuck and so you break it while brushing. A wide-tooth comb and some leave-in conditioner is also a good alternative.

Do you have frizzy, curly, dry, damaged or frizzy hair? Then it listens more closely to what is a good hairbrush for you.

Brushing normal straight or wavy hair

Do you have straight or wavy normal hair (not damaged, dry or frizzy)? Then you can basically use whatever brush you feel comfortable with. As long as you brush in dry hair, do not brush too roughly and do not brush too often. For example, brush twice a day. Hair that is wet is less strong and will break faster.

Avoid brushing curly hair

In hair with curls or lots of waves, it is better to brush or comb as little as possible to preserve your curl. Brushing your curls will cause them to frizz and brush the curl out of your hair. Use a comb with thick teeth, the thicker the better. After combing, shake your hair loose and you're done.

Do you still like to brush your curls? Then, unlike with a straight style, always do so in wet hair. Use a brush specifically for wet hair.

What you can also do is brush out your hair nicely just before washing. You will remove a lot of dirt and loose hair before washing.

Curly hair is often dry, so read the next section on dry hair.

Dry hair

If you have dry hair, it is often damaged. For dry hair, limit brushing. Although it is sometimes necessary to brush your hair to detangle it, excessive brushing causes damage to your hair. Brushing is also very useful to evenly distribute the natural oils on your head. But don't brush too often and brush very gently. Brushing too often or carelessly will roughen up your cuticles, which will make your hair dry and frizzy.

Brush your hair a maximum of twice a day with a good hairbrush to keep your frizz under control to some extent and always brush as gently as possible. Wet hair is fragile and brushing can easily break the fragile strands. So it is better not to brush your hair when it is wet. Therefore, use a wet brush or comb specially made for brushing wet hair and do so very gently.

Best hairbrush against frizzy hair
If your hair is frizzy, your hair is wide apart and therefore not smooth over each other. In that case, do not use a plastic comb or hairbrush. Plastic is statically charged and causes static and frizzy hair. The best brush against frizzy hair is therefore one made of (bamboo) wood. Also make sure the bristles or the heads on the bristles of the brush are not plastic.

Super tip to prevent frizzy hair: spray a little hairspray on your brush against frizzy hair. The hairspray keeps the loose hairs together so that frizz and static hair is minimised.

A round brush is the best brush for blow-drying your hair
Many people have round brushes at home and don't use them or use them in the wrong way. A round brush is what you use to blow-dry your hair. You roll the brush in your hair and when used properly in combination with the hairdryer, your hair gets more volume. The size of the brush determines the result.

Want more waves in straight hair? Choose a brush that is not too big at the front so you can blow dry more firmly. Do you prefer to blow dry your curls smoother? Then a large round brush is better suited. This is because when using a small brush in curly hair, the curl bounces back very quickly. However, blow-drying with a round brush takes practice. Watch carefully how you roll the brush in your hair. If you don't do this properly, the brush can get stuck in your hair. And try to get it out again!

Use the right care products to keep your hair in good condition. The cuticles will lie on top of each other better. As a result, your hair gets less tangled and you don't have to brush or comb it as often. You also get through your hair more easily, making it less stressful for your hair. Together with using a good hairbrush suitable for your hair type, you will keep your hair healthy, shiny and beautiful.
